💜Emotive post here to balance the silly reel.
💜It breaks my heart that mums are still asking for support that are clearly indicating symptoms of CMPA and getting advised to give lactose free formula. Needless to say this won't relieve symptoms for babies with CMPA.
.
.
💜CMPA is an allergy to the milk proteins and one of the most common food allergies in baby's, if not the most.
.
.
💜Lactose intolerance is rare in baby's and there are 4 types, all of which are again not common in baby's.
Primary - generally develops as we get older and can be common in people from Asian, African or Hispanic background
Secondary - due to other gastro condition, can also occur after a tummy bug and rectify quite quickly
Congenital - a defective gene that causes no lactase (needed to break down lactose)
Developmental - can develop when a baby is born prematurely
Have a look at my blog on CMPA symptoms for more support (link in bio).
If your baby is unsettled, has awful poops and has a rash then a lactose free formula won't fix this!

💚Do you supplement with Vitamin B12? 💚Vita 💚Do you supplement with Vitamin B12?
💚Vitamin B12 can be found in a plant based diet but as a Dietitian I would always recommend that mums to be take a prenatal that contains 10-25mcg of Vitamin B12.
💚Vitamin B12 is important for the development of your baby's brain and nervous system and is also supports to breakdown the amino acid homocysteine.
💚The science bit- High homocysteine levels have been linked to low Vitamin B12 and folate levels. Having high levels of homocysteine can increase mums risk of developing heart attack, stroke and heart disease (scary)
💚I always recommend supplementation of course alongside food sources of Vitamin B12. Just to give you an idea of where Vitamin B12 can be found;
Nutritional yeast - 5g - 2.2mcg *
Fortified plant based milk -0.38mcg per 100mls *
Fortified plant based yogurt - 0.38mcg per 100g *
*Not all these products contain the same amounts so it is important you check your labels. As you can see these are quite low levels too.
How do you meet your B12?

Have you been told this? Then it's incorrect. Also Have you been told this? Then it's incorrect. Also hair strand, vega and York test are not suitable ways I would recommend to diagnose allergy immediate or delayed allergy. The results aren't accurate and are a waste of your money. So i definitely wouldn't recommend doing this!
.
.
.
💜If you suspect your little one has a delayed milk allergy then to support their diagnosis you should seek help from a Dietitian (like me). We can discuss a full history and whether it is appropriate to do an elimination and reintroduction test or refer for skin prick testing.

PS. If your little one has an immediate reaction then yes a skin prick test can be used to support diagnosis. This doesn't need to be performed more often than every 2 years.
